North Adelaide Heritage Under Threat!
There is currently an application to demolish a Local Heritage Place in North Adelaide.
The applicant argues that it was a “mistake” that the building was heritage listed and that there is an “overreach” of heritage listing in the Adelaide City Council area.
To quote the application: “Although the building is protected as a Local Heritage Place, its demolition would improve the architectural character of the locality rather than diminish it, and represent a small step towards correcting the overreach of Local Heritage listing in the City of Adelaide”.
In reality, not enough historic buildings in the CBD are heritage listed, resulting in needless demolition. For example, there is a gorgeous villa at 17 Hutt Street that is currently earmarked for demolition.
Despite the City of Adelaide doing its utmost to protect the city’s heritage, the State government routinely rejects the buildings that the Council proposes to place on the Local Heritage Register.
We strongly encourage you to make a representation opposing the demolition of this Local Heritage Place to show developers that our heritage is not up for grabs.
