Airlie Keen
2018 candidate for Rural City of Murray Bridge.
Heritage survey responses.
Do you agree that the identification and protection of local heritage places is best done by local councils rather than DPTI (Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure)?
Over the past term, new heritage listings have been placed over the Murray Bridge Railway Precinct. I believe it was a long time coming, but I'm pleased it has finally occurred. In your opinion, has the current system of local heritage protection served your community well?
Ultimately developers have the power to either value or devalue our heritage, and there are those who ignore the rules and proceed with their developments as they know the penalties are weak.Should councils reject proposals to list local places of historic merit simply because an owner objects?
It should be merit based.Should neighbours of local heritage listed buildings have a right of appeal on development applications that propose demolition?
The public in general want to be heard.Should buildings listed as Contributory Items in your council area receive better protection?
It should be merit based and sensitive re-use and repurposing could be options.Do you agree that places proposed for listing by your council as Local Heritage or Contributory Items should be subject to review by DPTI? Or would reviews be more appropriately conducted by an independent source of expert advice?
A suitable system should be in place.Would you like to see your council work more closely with the National Trust of SA in protecting heritage, for example, by signing up as one of the Trust's Civic Partners?
I would be interested to know more detail. What are your personal suggestions for improving the way your council handles policy and planning?
There is a new planning system to be implemented soon.Should councils actively encourage individuals to nominate places for consideration as local heritage?
I share the concerns for the preservation of our heritage places, having been brought up knowing the work of the NTSA. If I am re-elected I will continue to do what I can to highlight the importance of protecting our heritage.
