Heritage survey responses.
Do you think that Councils and community members need to have a greater voice in planning and development decisions affecting their local area?
Yes.What role should Councils play in protecting local heritage places from demolition or inappropriate development?
They should have a greater role in decision making embedded in State Planning regulations. There needs to be more public notification and more authority for individual councils to make decisions based on local conditions. How would you seek to improve protections for heritage places in your area?
We need to update our list of them within our council area and ensure they are registered and protected. We rarely see new places added to local heritage listings. Why do you think this is?
People are not proactive until there are places threatened. Apathy reigns. How has the Planning and Design Code impacted on the heritage, amenity, and environment of your area? What changes would you seek to the Code?
I would like to see more protection of local zones…character and heritage. Trees need protection from developers and owners who do not understand the importance of trees and green space. What are the impacts of infill development in your area? What changes would you seek in the rules around infill development?
They adversely impact on the quality of life of affected residents and particularly neighbours: shadowing, loss of privacy, visually unsightly, claustrophobic building on boundaries there should be greater setbacks…more like 10 metres than 2. Trees planted MUST be maintained, not just planted.Construction of new housing typically uses 30% labour and 70% materials. Renovation of existing housing stock typically uses 70% labour and 30% materials. What policy changes would you like to see made to encourage people to renovate, rather than demolish and build anew?
Need to have greater zoning controls and plot ratios and prevent owners from allowing properties to become ‘derelict’ and then desiring demolition. How should the community be informed and involved in decisions about new developments?
Greater notification to residents over a wider area and being listed on council websites.Do you think there is adequate tree canopy across your local government area?
No. We continue to lose trees that are not significant or regulated and they take so many years to grow to heights that provide appropriate habitat, cooling, oxygen supply or shade. How would you like to see significant and regulated trees in your area protected from removal?
Fines are a useful deterrent and prosecutions are needed for those who remove them illegally. Bring back rules that protect them when more than 10 m from a house. What involvement should Councils have in decisions about protecting or removing significant and regulated trees?
Councils have planning rules to abide by.councils must do all they can to protect trees that take hundreds of years to be replaced. What actions would you advocate to slow or mitigate the impacts of climate change in your local government area?
Burnside declared a Climate Emergency during this current term of office back in 2019 and has policies to reach our target of Carbon Neutral by 2030. We are planting over 1000 trees per year too. We have quarterly Environmental Sustainability Reports and an Environmental Roadmap to guide decision making. What issues are there with traffic and parking in your area?
Local issues relate to long term parking in residential areas close to the city. Too many cars on roads because no off street parking on properties, especially when family grows. Speed is an issue. Recently we developed a Master Plan for traffic, transport and urban infill that will guide us as a Council as we go forward. How could transport options be improved in your area?
As stated, our Master Plan also looked at cycling, speed restrictions, public transport and connectivity. Cycle paths and routes connecting with other councils are also on our agenda. What would your top three priorities be for improving planning policy and outcomes in your local government area?
Smaller plot ratios and larger setbacks for new builds.
Heritage conservation and demolition controls
