Heritage survey responses.

1. Do you agree that the identification and protection of local heritage places is best done by local councils rather than DPTI (Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure)?
   Yes it is best done by local councils, they are more familiar with the area in question and have a better feel for what public opinion is, rather than a generalization by the DPTI and some outsourced reporting.

2. In your opinion, has the current system of local heritage protection served your community well?
   Yes, as long as the guide lines are adhered to. However if there is a matter of safety I think special circumstances should apply.

3. Should councils reject proposals to list local places of historic merit simply because an owner objects?
   No I believe there should be clear guidelines in place which super-cede the owners entitlement of ownership. Otherwise we will lose our historic identity and owners will be free to demolish or subdivide.

4. Should neighbours of local heritage listed buildings have a right of appeal on development applications that propose demolition?
   Yes especially when it can effect the local residents.

5. Should buildings listed as Contributory Items in your council area receive better protection?
   Yes as I have stated previously, there should be clear guidelines in place.

6. Do you agree that places proposed for listing by your council as Local Heritage or Contributory Items should be subject to review by DPTI? Or would reviews be more appropriately conducted by an independent source of expert advice?
   Yes but I think independent reviews are welcome, we need to be firm on heritage or contributory items, to maintain our heritage character as much as possible.

7. Would you like to see your council work more closely with the National Trust of SA in protecting heritage, for example, by signing up as one of the Trust's Civic Partners?
   Yes I think that would make a lot of sense and add a layer of protection.

8. What are your personal suggestions for improving the way your council handles policy and planning?
   I think the council should make ongoing improvements to policy to make it current. I believe council should be able to challenge planning to make sure developments are in-line with local requirements and aware of the impact on local residents in regards to waste, parking, space, local green areas and future congestion.

9. Should councils actively encourage individuals to nominate places for consideration as local heritage?
   Yes I think the locals should have the right to nominate, however it should be reviewed pending an independent consultation.
