Heritage survey responses.
Do you agree that the identification and protection of local heritage places is best done by local councils rather than DPTI (Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure)?
The documentation of local heritage and historic sites and local stories is very important. The way this is done could start with local council, and also explain and communicate the stories to others so that local knowledge is preserved. Local councils may not always be the best informed going forward, so it is important that this knowledge is shared by both groups, therefore everyone's' responsibility. In your opinion, has the current system of local heritage protection served your community well?
I have limited experience in this matter- but I would say that more could be done.Should councils reject proposals to list local places of historic merit simply because an owner objects?
Historic places of merit deserve to be kept on record, whether or not these lists are made widely available to the public could be on a case-by-case decision.Should neighbours of local heritage listed buildings have a right of appeal on development applications that propose demolition?
Any developments which require demolition should require notification to neighbours out of curtesy. Planning approval for demolition of local heritage listed building should be consulted with the Council and proper consultation would help planning approval be granted and stop lengthy delays of appeals etc. In principal i support people having a right of appeal to any development.Should buildings listed as Contributory Items in your council area receive better protection?
This is a question that I am unable to answer as I don't know enough about particulars. Again I would like to think that each case in point is unique.Do you agree that places proposed for listing by your council as Local Heritage or Contributory Items should be subject to review by DPTI? Or would reviews be more appropriately conducted by an independent source of expert advice?
On one hand the DPTI may put their own interests first, but on the other how many expensive "reviews" and "consultants" and "studies" do you need to spend money on?! If any on the places listed as Local Heritage or Contributory Items are reviewed by the DPTI I think that local council should have the right to ask for an independent review- but not always necessary.Would you like to see your council work more closely with the National Trust of SA in protecting heritage, for example, by signing up as one of the Trust's Civic Partners?
yesWhat are your personal suggestions for improving the way your council handles policy and planning?
Get on with it !Should councils actively encourage individuals to nominate places for consideration as local heritage?
Yes- as old local knowledge can be lost. This doesn't mean tht every suggestion would be acted upon- but that knowledge is priceless
