Heritage survey responses.
Do you think that Councils and community members need to have a greater voice in planning and development decisions affecting their local area?
Absolutely. They also need to make educated choices and decisions when it comes to matters of the environment. What role should Councils play in protecting local heritage places from demolition or inappropriate development?
Councils need to work in partnership with the proper authorities and those in their community who are interested in these areas. However they also need to balance preservation with need, safety and unfortunately, cost of maintenance. How would you seek to improve protections for heritage places in your area?
Unfortunately I am new to the idea of being a councilor so I think my first step is to become educated on the issues and the requirments. We rarely see new places added to local heritage listings. Why do you think this is?
Heritage listing is a way to maintain our links with the past but often this is at the expense of common sense. Here is where the tricky question of balance comes into play. What is the point of preserving a building as is if it no longer suits its purpose? Buildings, like many other things, often need to be upcycled to keep them relevant and effective, particularly in small communities. How has the Planning and Design Code impacted on the heritage, amenity, and environment of your area? What changes would you seek to the Code?
Here is where I need education. What are the impacts of infill development in your area? What changes would you seek in the rules around infill development?
EducationConstruction of new housing typically uses 30% labour and 70% materials. Renovation of existing housing stock typically uses 70% labour and 30% materials. What policy changes would you like to see made to encourage people to renovate, rather than demolish and build anew?
Low/zero cost loans to business owners to support the restoration, especially of street frontage, where appropriate.Do you think there is adequate tree canopy across your local government area?
