Heritage survey responses.

1. Do you agree that the identification and protection of local heritage places is best done by local councils rather than DPTI (Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure)?
   I believe that a combination of Council, Government and historical societies should work together to encourage decision-makers to make decisions on heritage that are well informed, that benefit the local community and are forward thinking.

2. In your opinion, has the current system of local heritage protection served your community well?
   As I am new to council, I haven't had the opportunity to see how the current system works first hand. I'm eager to learn more, and ensure that council decisions are informed by the local community. I value and make use of the natural and built heritage sites in the Beaumont ward and believe that heritage sites impact the character of our neighbourhoods.

3. Should councils reject proposals to list local places of historic merit simply because an owner objects?
   We need to be working in the best interests of the community. If such rejections are happening a lot, we need to look into why the proposal process is facing resistance, reduce conflict and work towards solutions that satisfy everyone's needs. Proposals to list local places of historic merit are about preserving sites for the future residents and visitors to Beaumont, and we need to take a long view on these matters.

4. Should neighbours of local heritage listed buildings have a right of appeal on development applications that propose demolition?
   As demolition is an irreversible and dramatic act, it should be considered carefully with as much available information and an opportunity to consider all perspectives.

5. Should buildings listed as Contributory Items in your council area receive better protection?
   Items of historical significance should be given respect and protection.

6. Do you agree that places proposed for listing by your council as Local Heritage or Contributory Items should be subject to review by DPTI? Or would reviews be more appropriately conducted by an independent source of expert advice?
   A balance of perspectives and expertise with regard to efficiency and expertise should be in place.

7. Would you like to see your council work more closely with the National Trust of SA in protecting heritage, for example, by signing up as one of the Trust's Civic Partners?
   Yes.

8. What are your personal suggestions for improving the way your council handles policy and planning?
   Engaging local organisations with specific expertise to ensure a proper balance of perspectives is maintained.

9. Should councils actively encourage individuals to nominate places for consideration as local heritage?
   Yes. All procedures should be open and accessible by as wide a range of stakeholders as possible.
