Nathan Daniell
2014 candidate for Adelaide Hills Council.
Heritage survey responses.
What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
The Adelaide Hills Council covers a vast area and owns numerous heritage assets along with being responsible for towns throughout the Hills which have significant heritage sites. The role of the AHC should be to: - Conserve and maintain current heritage assets in its portfolio - Work with community groups and private landholders who own heritage assets to ensure they are protected - Promote heritage sites to attract tourists to visit and appreciate heritage sites throughout the Hills region. What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
In addition to the current measures that are in place I would support the Adelaide Hills Council developing self-guided tours focused on the promotion of heritage in our region. What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
The most important current heritage issue is the UNESCO World Heritage bid for the Mount Lofty Ranges. What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
I will advocate for the UNESCO World Heritage bid for the Mount Lofty Ranges. The unique agricultural landscapes and historical settlements are part of what defines the character of the Hills and makes it so special. I will also work to develop self-guided tours which help promote important heritage sites in the Adelaide Hills Council.Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
Yes.Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
The Adelaide Hills is home to many iconic heritage sites, for example, the Bridgewater Mill, an 1860 heritage-rich flour mill right around the corner from my home. During this election we have an alliance of candidates have openly stated that "arts, culture and heritage" should not be included as part of the current budget. I would like to declare that I support having this as part of the budget as I believe it adds significant value to the community. As a Councillor I will work hard to help promote and protect heritage throughout the Adelaide Hills so future generations are able to learn and appreciate the heritage of our region.
