Heritage survey responses.
What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
Most heritage listing and management is handled by agencies of federal and state governments. Local government involvement may be delegated or acquired and may be funded by these other authorities. It depends entirely on the ownership, heritage value, and capacity of the Council to maintain a property for which it has responsibility. Local community pressure will also impact on Council's role in management of any heritage site. What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
The existing laws and listing procedures are adequate. I support unfettered voluntary activity in these areas. But I abhor the current trend at all levels of government to treat volunteers as unpaid supervised employees. What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
Currently, the highlighted issue is the proposed sale by the National Trust of property entrusted to its protection. What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
I am not contemplating any new actions in this regard. However, Council may have to consider a further commitment stemming from its dispute with the National Trust.Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
Yes. Unless a development impacts on State interests, it should remain a local matter.Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
Councils are expected to shoulder a far greater proportion of responsibility than the higher levels of government relative to their total budgets. Heritage, while important, must take its place in the budget hierarchy.
