John Sanderson
2014 candidate for District Council of Yankalilla.
Heritage survey responses.
What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
We do not do enough in our area to support Heritage , I believe the Councils role is to provide leadership and funding to promote local issues and to act as a conduit for broader publicity and support for state and national initiatives. What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
Planning , programming , financial and in kind in identifying and if necessary purchasing heritage sitesWhat is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
As the location of the very beginning of European settlement in SA we have to preserve the many significant places and buildings that we entrusted with.there has been a lack of initiative in the past and we must rectify this,What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
Firstly a District wide survey , compilation of a professional heritage register of buildings and sites , provision of financial allocation and all leading to a Council affirmed policy on Heritage . The Councils existing Public Consultation policy to be updated to emphasise Heritage principles and and a a program of Information provision on the importance and relevance of Heritage .Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
Absolutely , the current trend toward centralising planning and development powers is wrong .It disenfranchises local communities and gives State government the ability to ride rough shod over Heritage matter . Big end of town has never been and never will be sensitive to Hertage .Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
We are starting from scratch here , the last work done on Heritage was is 1988 , there is a History of resistance in our District and a great need for an education and information program .As always money will be an issue and we will have to give a greater priority to the issue as well as seek grants funding and assistance from bodies such as the National Trust
